Sbarro Renner Prototype

Sbarro Renner Prototype

The 2019 Sbarro Renner Prototype is a spectacular achievement, designed and built in just 47 days by the 2018–2019 class of the Espera Sbarro school. Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, this radical “barchetta” serves as a vibrant tribute to the endurance prototypes of the 1970s and 80s, evoking the golden age of hill climbs and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

More than just a concept, it materializes the uncompromising vision of the students from Montbéliard, blending a fascinating neo-retro aesthetic with proven mechanicals to create a bold bridge between racing nostalgia and contemporary design.

Beneath its rear bodywork, the Renner swaps exotic engines for a powerplant with real character: a 2.5-liter Subaru turbocharged Flat-4 (Boxer) engine, delivering approximately 300 horsepower and 407 Nm of torque. Mid-mounted for optimal balance, this beating heart is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, ensuring a pure and engaging drive. Thanks to its steel multitubular chassis and lightweight composite body, the weight is kept to around 1,000 kg, offering an explosive power-to-weight ratio worthy of a true race car.

Aesthetically, the Renner is striking for its unique gold livery and ultra-low silhouette that appears to hug the asphalt. It adopts the design cues of Group C prototypes, featuring a massive rear wing, a functional roof air intake, and an exceptionally wide track. The front end is low-slung and streamlined, integrating minimalist lighting, while the car sits on 19 and 20-inch OZ Racing “Zeus” wheels, reinforcing its squat, muscular stance.

The interior is a cockpit dedicated to the act of driving, mixing raw sportiness with refined finishes. The cabin is upholstered in a mix of black leather and Alcantara with gold stitching that echoes the exterior. Deep bucket seats, a sport steering wheel, and instrumentation focused solely on the essentials immerse the driver in a competition-grade atmosphere, free from any superfluous distractions.

The 2019 Sbarro Renner prototype is more than a styling exercise: it is a demonstration of artisanal skill and passion. By reinterpreting the codes of endurance legends with a modern touch and an iconic Japanese engine, it stands as one of the most striking and accomplished creations in the recent history of the Espera Sbarro school.
