Porsche 911 Speedster 3.2L “Turbo Look”

Porsche 911 Speedster 3.2L “Turbo Look”

The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster 3.2L is a true icon, marking a spectacular finale for the “G-Series” (the second generation of the 911). Conceived as a spiritual tribute to the legendary 356 Speedster of the 1950s, it revived a minimalist and hedonistic driving philosophy.

Out of a total production of 2,104 units worldwide, the vast majority (approximately 1,933 units) were delivered with the “Turbo Look” (WTL) option, eclipsing the ultra-rare narrow-body version. With its raked windshield and “double-hump” tonneau cover, it is considered by many to be the “coolest” and most collectible air-cooled 911 of the 1980s.

Behind the rear axle, the Speedster utilizes the proven and reliable mechanicals of the Carrera 3.2: a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated Flat-6 producing 231 hp (or 217 hp for catalyzed versions) and 284 Nm of torque. Despite what its appearance suggests, it is not turbocharged. This engine is mated to the highly sought-after G50 5-speed manual gearbox, renowned for its precision and robustness. Thanks to a curb weight of roughly 1,220 kg, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of approximately 245 km/h. The “Turbo Look” version does more than just widen the bodywork; it also inherits the chassis, stabilizer bars, and the powerful braking system from the 930 Turbo, ensuring rock-solid handling.

Aesthetically, the Speedster is an immediately identifiable rolling sculpture. Its visual signature rests on two key elements: a shortened windshield tilted 5 degrees further than the standard cabriolet, and a magnificent “double-bubble” polyurethane rear cowl that conceals a rudimentary manual folding top (intended for “emergency” use). The “Turbo Look” option adds significantly widened rear fenders, the famous black “shark fin” stone guards, and deep-dish 16-inch Fuchs wheels, giving the car a low, aggressive stance.

The interior sacrifices the superfluous for the sake of style and weight savings. Strictly a two-seater (the rear seats are deleted in favor of a carpeted storage area), the cabin often features electric sport seats and, occasionally, air conditioning—though the car’s philosophy practically demands top-down driving. The seating position is lower, offering a sensation of speed heightened by the wind rushing just above the passengers’ heads.

The 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster 3.2L “Turbo Look” is more than just a convertible: it is a time machine and an object of absolute desire. By combining the legendary reliability of the 3.2 engine and the G50 gearbox with the stunning aesthetics of the Turbo (without its mechanical complexity), it represents the perfect balance of California style and German engineering for collectors.
