Sbarro Saetta Prototype
Sbarro Saetta Prototype
The Sbarro Saetta prototype is a radical and emotive “barchetta,” designed and built by the 2019-2020 class of the Espera Sbarro Montbéliard school. Named “Saetta” (Italian for “lightning”), it serves as a vibrant tribute to the legendary Italian racing cars of the ’60s and ’70s, such as the Alfa Romeo T33 and the Ferrari 312 PB.
As the students’ first collective project, it embodies the school’s core philosophy: learning by doing, without compromise. With its featherweight design and noble engine, it is a pure sensation machine, built to bolt across the track just as its name suggests.

Beneath its sculpted rear cover, the Saetta houses the heart of an Italian grand tourer: a 3.2-liter twin-turbo V8 sourced from the Maserati 3200 GT. This prestigious engine, renowned for its explosive temperament, is mated to a manual gearbox of Audi origin (inverted for the mid-rear engine layout), ensuring total control over the power. Resting on a custom-built steel multitubular chassis, the car boasts an extraordinarily low weight of just 762 kg. This phenomenal power-to-weight ratio promises lightning-fast acceleration and devilish agility. Grip is provided by Michelin Pilot Sport GT tires mounted on racing wheels.
Visually, the Saetta captures the essence of Italian speed. Its composite bodywork features the low, sleek silhouette typical of vintage endurance “barchettas.” It is distinguished by the absence of a windshield—replaced by a minimalist wind deflector—and generous air intakes that feed the V8 and its intercoolers. The “Rossa” red livery, a direct nod to Italy’s national racing colors, emphasizes its sensual yet aggressive curves. The subtle integration of the letter “R” in its name further highlights this chromatic and sporting identity.
The interior is a hardcore racing cockpit, stripped of all superfluity. Entering the car requires a bit of gymnastics, typical of prototypes. Once seated, the pilot becomes one with the machine, surrounded by the exposed structure and essential-only controls. Everything is designed for efficiency and feedback, placing the driver at the center of the action—face in the wind, ears filled with the whistle of the Maserati V8’s turbos.
The Sbarro Saetta prototype is more than just a student design exercise; it is a love letter to mechanical engineering and motorsport history. By pairing an ultralight chassis with a high-character engine, it perfectly illustrates the motto that inspired it: “Correre come una saetta!” (Run like lightning!).
