Alfa Romeo 8C (Gordon Chism)

Alfa Romeo 8C (Gordon Chism)

American sculptor and visual artist Gordon Chism, a passionate enthusiast of classic automobiles, began in the 1980s to create representations of cars that left their mark on international racing.

He was discovered by the Art and the Automobile Gallery in New York, which brought him recognition beyond the borders of the United States. His bronzes are produced in various sizes, and some models are even life-sized.

One of his finest works is the Alfa Romeo “Monza” driven by Tazio Nuvolari, who won the Monaco Grand Prix in 1932. Crafted at a 1:1 scale, measuring approximately 4.15 meters in length and weighing 1,300 kilograms of bronze, this remarkable sculpture captures the movement, speed, and exertion of the driver as he attacks the corner.

Number 28 was the race number of the car at Monaco, where it achieved a magnificent victory in 1932. Four artist’s proofs were produced at full scale (No. 1 to 4/4), and this one bears the number 4/4, with a further series of eight additional examples originally planned. It is, however, unlikely that the other eight will ever be cast, as the current circumstances make such undertakings very difficult today.

On a lighter note, Gordon Chism liked to say that he could guarantee his car for 200 years without any maintenance.

His works are exhibited in the United States, across Europe (in Spain, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and now at the Coligny Car Museum).
