Sbarro Brescia Spider
Sbarro Brescia Spider
The 1979 Sbarro Brescia Spider is a unique and fascinating creation by the renowned Swiss designer and coachbuilder Franco Sbarro. Conceived as a handcrafted tribute to the legendary 1950s Maserati 300 S, it revives the spirit of the mythical Italian barchettas that competed in the Mille Miglia (for which the city of Brescia served as both the start and finish line). Custom-built by hand, it combines a classic aesthetic of rare elegance with proven German mechanics.
Recently highlighted during an Artcurial auction, this Brescia Spider perfectly embodies Sbarro’s philosophy: offering the thrill and charm of motorsport’s golden age without the temperamental nature of a period racing engine.

Beneath its Italian-inspired silhouette, this Sbarro Brescia hides Bavarian mechanicals: a 2.5-liter BMW inline-six engine developing approximately 171 horsepower. This block, renowned for its smoothness and melodious soundtrack, is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends power exclusively to the rear wheels. Thanks to a lightweight body made of composite materials (polyester and fiberglass) resting on a specific tubular chassis, the car’s weight is kept to around 900 kg. This highly favorable power-to-weight ratio allows it to deliver brisk acceleration and reach a theoretical top speed of approximately 220 km/h, blending a sporty temperament with very appreciable reliability.
Aesthetically, the Brescia Spider is a masterpiece of nostalgia. It brilliantly recreates the voluptuous proportions and pure lines of the Maserati 300 S: an endless hood, sensual wing curves, a wide-gaping oval grille, and sculpted side vents. The absence of bumpers, its cowled headlights, and the small streamlined wind-deflector on the driver’s side reinforce its racing-machine allure. The integration of polished details—such as the exposed side-exit exhaust and superb classic wire wheels with central knock-off nuts—perfects this stunning temporal illusion and gives it remarkable presence.
The interior is a luxurious invitation to travel back to the 1950s. Unlike the spartan rusticity of a true competition car, Sbarro equipped his Brescia with a refined cabin where high-quality leather coats the bucket seats and trim, complemented by thick carpeting. The dashboard houses a full suite of analog instrumentation behind a magnificent large steering wheel with a wooden rim and slotted aluminum spokes. The driver and passenger find themselves in the typical, romantic atmosphere of “gentlemen drivers,” designed to enjoy the open road under the sky.
The 1979 Sbarro Brescia Spider is more than a mere replica: it is a bridge between two eras and a true handcrafted work of art. By combining the sculptural beauty of post-war Italian design, Swiss bespoke craftsmanship, and rigorous BMW engineering, it represents for collectors the perfect balance between the historical aesthetic of the dolce vita and a reassuring, thrilling driving experience
